It’s public comment time for APA Project 2021-0207 – Town of Inlet Shared Use Public Safety and Wireless Communication Tower. The proposed project includes the installation of two monopine telecommunications towers, one 90-feet tall and the other 95-feet tall (95 feet and 100 feet tall to the top of simulated branching); installation of antennas on the towers for T-Mobile, AT&T, Herkimer County, Hamilton County, and the Town of Inlet; and construction of three separate equipment shelters/pads at the base of the towers. The project involves construction of an access drive 1,130± feet in length from Limekiln Road, to connect with an existing 3,010±-foot-long access drive, and then to connect with an additional 830± feet of existing access drive (to be widened) to reach the tower site. Facing resistance from the Palo Alto Police Department, the Palo Alto City Council reluctantly agreed on Monday to keep police radio communication encrypted and inaccessible to the media and the public.
During a long discussion that stretched well past midnight, council members repeatedly acknowledged that Police Chief Robert Jonsen’s abrupt move in January 2021 to encrypt radio communications conflicts with the public’s right to know about what’s happening in the community and hinders the media’s ability to cover breaking news. Portage County residents can now send emergency messages to 911 dispatchers by text message.
Wireless customers can now send a text, up to 140 characters, to 911 in the event of an emergency.
Sheriff Mike Lukas said texts to 911 should only be used in an emergency situation.

VAN BUREN — A project to build an emergency communication center in Crawford County got the money needed to continue to the next step at no extra cost to the taxpayers.
The Quorum Court approved using more than $1.03 million from the county’s American Rescue Plan fund for the new center at its meeting March 21.
