Dispatchers at the Volusia County Communications Center handled nearly 12,000 calls as Tropical Storm Ian battered the area, flooding neighborhoods and trapping residents in their homes, officials said.
Emergency 9-1-1 call takers fielded 11,954 calls on Sept. 28 and Sept. 29, said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Residents of Austin, Texas, have been left waiting during emergency situations as a result of high staff vacancy rates. In the month of October, only 64.09% of 911 calls were answered within 15 seconds, well below the national standard of 90% in 15 seconds or less. The average hold time for more than 38,000 calls that have come in this month has been two-and-a-half minutes. All of this is happening as Austin’s crime rate remains high.

YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office announced that a $4.8 million grant from the North Carolina 911 Board was recently awarded to Yancey County Emergency Communications (911) to help build a new communications center.
