Behind the Badge: Metro Net Dispatchers Adjust to New Tech

The job of a Metro Net dispatcher today makes 25 years ago seem like the dark ages.

Twenty-five years ago, when Tracy Nolan began her career as a dispatcher with the Buena Park PD, answering 911 calls was very different than it is today.

Back then, virtually all emergency calls came from landlines; only a fraction came from what now seem like brick-sized mobile phones, compared to today’s amazingly powerful (and small) smart gadgets.

Today, 80% of all 911 calls are made from mobile phones, says Nolan, citing a national statistic. Nolan now is administrative supervisor at the Metro Net Fire Dispatch call center in Anaheim, which, in addition to Anaheim, handles fire emergency phone calls for six other O.C. cities that are part of a joint-powers authority.

Early Citizen Response/CPR/AEDs; Uninterrupted Compressions & Dispatcher-assisted CPR Emphasized by EMS Experts at CPR Summit

Dr. Eisenberg, each of the speakers at the 2019 Cardiac Arrest Survivor’s Summit, and I strongly believe that keys in improving cardiac arrest include:

1) More emphasis, diligence and evaluation of dispatch center CPR instruction to callers.

Teaching dispatchers to better recognize cardiac arrest through areas like the recognition of agonal breathing were also emphasized throughout the Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit.

Places like Singapore and Copenhagen have adopted Dr. Eisenberg’s and Seattle’s ideas and really ramped up their telephone CPR delivery which has greatly improved their resuscitate and results.

2) High quality, uninterrupted compressions must be provided by rescuers

All speakers emphasized that our emphasis must be on keeping compressions going and limiting breaks in compressions to < 10 seconds at all times. This has shown great impact on resuscitation results.

3) Mobilizing the masses (citizens) as initial responders

LONDON, ONT. — During a new constable’s swearing-in ceremony at the London Police Service headquarters Friday morning, Deb Dodds, a 911 dispatcher for over 40 years, was honoured to present her daughter Jessica with her badge.

“This is definitely one of the most exciting moments of my life,” Const. Jessica Dodds told CTV News London. “This has been a dream for me since I was 12 years old. And I was very fortunate that my mom was able to give me my badge today.”

Deb Dodds is eligible for retirement but says one of the reason she hasn’t taken it is because “I wanted to stay for a while so I could dispatch her calls … and she wanted me to say for a while so it’s kind of nice.”
