Officials in Brevard County are asking residents to limit 9-1-1 calls to “true emergencies” because of long waits at local hospitals inundated with COVID-19 patients. The recent surge in hospitalizations have overwhelmed facilities, some of which have had to divert incoming patients elsewhere.
“We want to save the ambulance trips and the emergency rooms for those that are critically sick or injured, just because of the overcrowding,” Brevard Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer said Thursday. “We’ve experienced wait times in excess of an hour trying to transfer patients over [to the hospital], which creates a hardship on the whole system.” … READ MORE

On Sunday morning at approximately 4:27 a.m., the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 240 block of Blue Bird Road in Falls of Rough to assist Grayson County EMS and the Falls of Rough Volunteer Fire Department with a patient who had called to report breathing problems and chest pain.
The EMS crew advised that the patient was armed and was being uncooperative. Upon Sgt. Jason Luedke’s arrival, he noticed that the man, Dennis Embry, 61, of Falls of Rough, appeared to be under the influence of drugs, according to a GCSO press release.
Because Embry was being belligerent to the EMS crew and had fraudulently called 9-1-1, Luedke arrested him for harassing communications… READ MORE

The Barry County E9-1-1 board has welcomed two new faces, as Nick Mercer and Emma Burns are joining the team.
Mike Phillips, Barry County E9-1-1 director, said a total of seven members sit on the board, three in the south, three in the north and a chairman, which is an at-large seat.
“The terms are for four years and are normally [elected] at the April election,” he said. “In the event there is no one who signs up, the board is able to appoint an individual or the write-in candidate.”

Months after Durham stopped routing nearly one in 10 of its 911 calls to Raleigh because of an operator shortage, a city resident says his repeated calls for help went unanswered.
In December, staffing shortages led the Durham 911 center to begin regularly routing calls through the Raleigh-Wake center, The N&O previously reported. At the time, calls would ring for 30 seconds before automatically transferring to Raleigh.
That program saw about 9% of Durham’s calls sent to Raleigh, and was criticized after some firefighters said it caused dispatching errors and delays… READ MORE
