Year-long 9-1-1 call diversion pilot project now in effect in Toronto (Canada)

For the next year, people in crisis in downtown Toronto who call 911 for help will be better connected with the appropriate mental health supports they need.

Earlier this week, Toronto Police Service (TPS) and Gerstein Crisis Centre (GCC) launched a one-year 9-1-1 Call Diversion Pilot Project.

This new service, which comes in response to calls from the mental health community to reform policing response in this city, will now see crisis workers respond to non-emergency mental health-related calls, instead of police officers… READ MORE

County 911 consolidation could be costly (OH)

LISBON — County 911 officials continue to look at public-safety answering point (PSAP) consolidation for the county, but funding it could be costly.

Members of the 911 Emergency Service Committee held their quarterly meeting Thursday at the county EMA building, a meeting which included Steve Haberman and Stacy Banker who joined the meeting online from Chicago. Both are from Mission Critical Partners LLC, the company hired to study the idea of consolidating the PSAPs.

Spartanburg Co. 911 call center seeking operators (SC)

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The workforce shortage continues to impact the lives of many people across the nation.

Emergency Telecommunications Centers Are a Vital Part of a Life-Saving System (Washington DC)

Each year an estimated 350,000 sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) events occur in the United States in an out-of-hospital environment. In 2020, D.C. Fire and EMS reported 964 SCAs in D.C. with only a 4.7% survival rate. An SCA occurs when the heart’s electrical system abruptly malfunctions, and the heart suddenly stops beating normally. It can happen to anyone, at any time. Almost all of these events result in a call for help to 911. Without quick intervention in the form of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, death from SCA is certain.

Telecommunicators, such as 911 call takers, are true first responders and a critical link in the cardiac arrest chain of survival… READ MORE

Ryan proposes developing public safety communications center (NY)

KINGSTON – In the upcoming 2022 budget, Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan is proposing a centralized emergency response center to help with 911 emergencies and non-emergencies.

“Think of this as the central nervous system for emergency response,” said Ryan. “It will also have the ability for our residents to call for non-emergency services, whether they need heating assistance or they need child support services. If they have issues about paving on a county road.”

Ryan expects the center to cost at least $10 million, and when completed by 2024, it will provide for coordinated responses to all types of calls and be more efficient for county taxpayers… READ MORE
