JOPLIN, Mo. — In an emergency, many people know to dial 911.
Eventually there will be a separate emergency number to call to try and prevent suicide.
The Federal Communications Commission has approved the designation of 988 as the national suicide prevention hotline.

NORWALK — The Huron County Emergency Management Agency signed a contract with Frontier Communications to upgrade the bandwidth and internet speed at Huron County dispatch sites last December. The agency is still waiting for those upgrades eight months later.
The last remaining snag is the upgrade at the Norwalk Police Department. EMA coordinator Tacy Bond said Frontier still has to run lines from an outdoor telephone pole and into the building. They’ve been stuck on that step for three months… READ MORE

POLK CUNTY—Polk County is restructuring its 911 communication center by deciding to put the direction of the center under the office of the sheriff.
The county also recently hired Jeremy Gregg to be the communication center director. Gregg is a lifelong resident of Polk County and has experience as a communications professional. He also serves as the Green Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief and will continue in that role… READ MORE

JUNEAU, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) — Public safety officials in Dodge County announced a free service designed that provides first responders with more information in the event of an emergency is now available to residents.
The service, Smart911, allows people to sign up online to provide important information for 9-1-1 call takers during emergencies. Community members can create Safety Profiles for their households that includes any information they want response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information… READ MORE

With the state mandate that all police officers in New Mexico must wear body cameras while interacting with the public now in effect, local agencies are preparing for the change.
Two departments — Belen and Los Lunas — already use body cameras and will make minor changes to their policies to be in compliance with the law.
The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office and Bosque Farms Police Department don’t currently use cameras and will have to find the money to purchase equipment, storage space for the digital files and draft new policies… READ MORE
