The new system with 1,800 radios for countywide public safety and public works employees should be fully operational by September, according to Project Manager Brian Zastoupil with the Red River Regional Dispatch Center.
City and rural firefighters, police and sheriff’s departments, ambulance crews, public works employees and others involved in public safety use the radios.
So I’m pretty sure we have akk “butt dialed” someone, somewhere, sometime. Maybe even many times. Usually no harm, no foul, right?
Now this brings to light a recent Facebook post from the Maine Department of Public Safety Communications department that has many people upset.
The issue is with 9-1-1 hang up calls and the domino effect of those calls. It appears this is mostly an Apple iPhone issue as Apple has recently added a feature that makes it easy to make an emergency call by simply holding two buttons together at the same time…
Local Sheriff’s offices are seeing an increase in accidental 911 calls. It’s creating a drain on resources.
So far this month, the Langlade County Emergency Dispatch has gotten more than 159 accidental 911 calls and more than 700 so far this year.
Langlade County Sheriff Mark Westen didn’t have the exact numbers of how big of an increase that was to past years.

AT&T (NYSE: T) has announced the expansion of the FirstNet broadband communications platform’s deployable network assets to support public safety personnel during emergency response efforts.
The company said Thursday the expansion provides law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical service personnel and other first responders access to over 100 FirstNet portable cell sites to deliver communications support during the 2021 hurricane and wildfire seasons.
“We’ve expanded the FirstNet fleet to provide even more portable cell sites, as well as to introduce new types of assets to help public safety stay mission ready,” said Jason Porter, president of public sector and FirstNet at AT&T….
Land leases for three towers in Orwell, Smithfield and Wysox townships were approved by Bradford County Commissioners Thursday as part of an effort to improve emergency communications in areas where it has been lacking.
According to Public Safety and Planning Director Matt Williams, two other towers are currently in development in Troy Township and at Mt. Pisgah County Park, while officials look for additional sites in Ridgebury Township and the Camptown area.
“While we’re doing this, we’re building these towers heavy enough that we will be able to lease space on them to cell providers to enhance cell phone communications in more remote areas of our county which, again, has a public safety aspect,” Commissioner Chairman Daryl Miller said…
