South Carolina Supreme Court says Greenville County road and telecommunications fees are illegal taxes

The South Carolina Supreme Court struck down a pair of measures Wednesday that Greenville County used to increase its road maintenance fee and establish a telecommunications assessment.

The court found that the $25 yearly fee on registered vehicles and the annual $14.95 telecommunications fee charged to property owners in the county are illegal taxes.

The financial implications of the ruling remained unclear Wednesday afternoon, but they may range from nearly $7 million to as much as $16 million in lost revenue each year…

Officer Gerald “Terry” Fitzgerald retired from the Greenwich Police Department after 27 years of service to the Greenwich Police Dept. He joined the force in 1994. Before becoming a Greenwich Police Officer, Officer Fitzgerald was a Police Officer for the Town of Wilton from 1989 to 1994. His total service in law enforcement was 32 years. Officer Fitzgerald was a graduate of the 321st Municipal Police Training Council.

Officer Fitzgerald’s career included assignments as a Patrol Officer, Master Patrol Officer and ended as a Police Communications Officer. He also was a Field Training Officer, Honor Guard Team member, and Emergency Medical Technician.

In 2010, Chief Ridberg (Ret.) appointed Officer Fitzgerald as the Police Communications Officer. In this role, Officer Fitzgerald was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town of Greenwich emergency radio system.
