New Jersey police dispatcher stole almost $5K from volunteer EMS group

LACEY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey police dispatcher was charged with stealing $4,690 from a volunteer emergency medical services organization, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday.

According to Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, 33-year-old Matthew Bender used his access to the Lanoka Harbor Emergency Medical Services’ PayPal account to move the money into his personal account.

Authorities found that the grant money awarded to the LHEMS was disbursed to a PayPal account managed by Bender, Billhimer said…

A power outage knocked Houston’s 911 system offline for several hours Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The incident began when the Houston Emergency Center lost power mid-day Saturday, Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña said. Generators restored power, but when the regular power came back on, a technical malfunction prevented the call center from restoring power to its computer aided dispatch system, he said…

It took 28 minutes for the Madawaska ambulance to respond from where it was, 28.5 miles away on Route 1, returning from transporting a patient to Cary Medical Center in Caribou. But that doesn’t mean it was any less traumatizing for Real Hebert, who waited on the line with 911 the whole time, cleaning up the saliva pooling in Simone’s mouth and pleading with the dispatcher for updates on the ambulance’s arrival…
