MILWAUKEE — Re-imagining public safety was the goal of a panel discussion Friday with Milwaukee Acting Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, Milwaukee Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, and Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division Administrator Mike Lappen.

Among the questions: should Milwaukee police respond to all 911 calls? And, if Milwaukee police stop responding to certain non-emergency calls, who will?

There are various arguments in favor of sending a trained person or group to respond to 911 calls involving non-violent situations, or mental health emergencies, rather than an armed officer. But that will require some big changes…

Gillian pitches $42M public safety project for Ocean City (NJ)

OCEAN CITY — Mayor Jay Gillian acknowledges $42 million is a big number.

That’s the estimated price of a proposal to combine the city’s police and fire operations in a single building on West Avenue at Fifth Street.

In a recent interview, Gillian said the estimate covers everything — construction of a new building, demolition of the two existing headquarters, relocation of the city’s skate park, the costs to move in and more.

Dodge County Sheriff urges public to help reduce 911 hang-up calls (WI)

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to help them reduce 911 hang-up calls.

Sheriff Dale Schmidt stated Friday that the number of 911 hang-ups his agency has received is becoming “daunting.”

The sheriff’s office has taken 2,292 calls this year where the caller hangs up and there were 4,515 of them in 2020. The agency responded to 769 of them this year…

CAPE MAY – Cape May‘s decision whether to move to Cape May County central dispatch was made for it by a bolt of lightning.  

A direct lightning strike hit Cape May City Hall, at 5:30 p.m. July 20. According to City Manager Mike Voll, the strike fried all the equipment in the police department’s dispatch unit. 

Police kept 911 operational by switching to a more antiquated radio system. Voll said the damaged equipment is beyond repair…
