ALAMOSA – Next Generation 911 is a new system comprised of Emergency Services Internet Provider (IP) networks that went live July 14th 2021. This allows the public to now text message emergencies to the San Luis Valley E911 Center.
NG911 incorporates Rapid SOS which automatically displays the telephone number as well as latitude and longitude of the 911 caller on the emergency operator’s screen. This is unlike Basic 911 service, where the distressed caller has to tell the operator where he or she is calling from.
The dispatch center still handles 911 calls phoned in as well as 911 texting. Calling is the preferred method and texting should be used when voice is not possible. Texting can be beneficial for the hearing impaired or if talking on the phone may place an individual in more danger. Calling on cell phones in areas with weak signals may make it hard to connect to get help. In that case, texting may have a better chance to reach 911…
